Obituary of Earley Andrew Willis

“To be absent from the body is to be presentwith the Lord.”

 

Earley A. Willis Jr. was born September 9, 1931 in Claremore, Oklahoma to the late Earley and Anna Willis.

 

He was a graduate of Lincoln High School and attended Wichita State (1948-1951) in Wichita, KS.  Earley joined the USAF in 1951.   

 

While stationed in Cocoa Beach, FL, Earley met and wed Barbara Knight in 1955.  He and Barbara travelled the World, living in California, Tokyo, Greenland and Alabama.  They settled in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1964. 

 

Earley was the first African American sales representative at Montgomery Ward’s Automotive Department and stayed with the company for 25 yrs. He could be found by his wife’s side supporting her with the Majorettes, Student Council, and School Dances. Earley was a faithful Member of Unity Temple of Truth and 1st Baptist Church.  One of his favorite pastimes was watching sports, especially the NFL & NBA.  He was known for genuine kindness towards everyone he met. 

 

Earley leaves to cherish his memory; Barbara Knight Willis, devoted wife of 65 years, daughter, Desiree Babbs and husband John Babbs and granddaughter, Jasmine Babbs of Melbourne, FL, brother Armond Davis Ross of Oklahoma and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

 

Earley was an avid supporter of BCU, the Alma Mater of his beloved wife.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that if you are so moved, please make a donation to Bethune-Cookman University at donate.cookman.edu in honor of Earley Willis Jr.
