I am sorry for your loss. When I saw the obituary in the Alexandria Times -I thought I know this person. I was on Fort Belvoir and in the commissary and in the pet section. He started talking to me about animals and charities and golf and before you know it-it was about two hours went by. He was so kind, funny and smart. I liked him right away! God Bless you all-family and friends and people like me that had the wonderful opportunity to meet him, briefly -but a lasting memory and I thought of him often!

Dear Gail, Peter, and families,
I am sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved father Tom. I didn't realize that your mother, Beris, had predeceased him because I have moved twice since I lived across the street from your parents on Fontaine St. in Alexandria (next door to Nancy and Ray Plunkett). Your parents were such gems! I was lucky to be able to enjoy your mother's gardening talents, as I viewed their front yard on a daily basis. I recall you dad heading off with his golf clubs and your mom running off to do errands, with their dear little white dog with them. My then husband and I enjoyed an enchanting evening in their backyard for dinner, with your parents regaling us with ghost stories from one of the prior homes they lived in.
They were a lovely, devoted couple! I know you have many fond memories to sustain you. My husband and I will keep all of you in our prayers.

I first met Tom, his amazing and lovely wife, Beris, and their children, Gail and Peter, in 1960. They lived next door to my parents in Gibraltar, where the dads were stationed for 4 years while representing their respective services. This foursome was the nucleus of a group of a dozen or so officers and their wives who all became fast friends ... and whose relationships endured over many years and the separation of several continents. My brother and I visited Gibraltar many times and were taken in as friends and family by all the Hortons. I remember Tom and Beris as people who always had a smile and good word to say about everything and everyone. Tom and Beris retired in Alexandria, VA, where my parents were also living, so their friendship carried on ... as did mine. I called him this past D-Day anniversary just to check in (knowing that he had been not only an RAF pilot engaged in the Battle of Britain, but also in the D-Day invasion itself) ... and asked if he remembered what he had been doing on D-Day. He said he did, and quite vividly. He remembered flying his Mosquito on a dawn mission over Normandy where he had been dropping dye markers to identify later-that-day bombing targets. Upon completion, as he was heading west back to his base in England, he encountered literally tens of thousands of ships and planes going in the opposite direction! He recalled that this was the first time he had any notion that the invasion was scheduled for that day, June 6th. Tom will be missed by all his friends and family, and also should remembered by everyone as one about whom Winston Churchill said, " ... never have so many owed so much to so few ...".

I never met him, but encountered his obituary in the Washington Post. He was, evidently, an amazing man. Per your suggestion, I have donated $50 to Fancy Cat and Dog Rescue in the Washington DC are. Rest in peace, Tom. My condolences to the family.
