Obituary of Jack S. McCandless

McCandless, Jack S., 88, of St. Petersburg died Saturday March 31, 2001. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, he came to St. Petersburg as a child. He was in the first graduating class of St. Petersburg High and also graduated from the University of Florida. He served as a Captain in the US Army. He was a self-employed architect for over 50 years where he designed the original library now the student center, the Math Building, and the Science Building all at the University of South Florida. He also designed Maximo Elementary School and the William C. Cramer Federal Building both in St. Petersburg. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Survivors include two 2 stepsons: Paul E. Kaniss ? Roseburg, Oregon and Phillip R. Gourley ? Niota, Tenn.; two 2 nieces: Katherine Marshbum ? Wrightsville, NC and Margie Matthews ? St. Petersburg, FL; and several great nieces and nephews. The family prefers donations to the SPCA.
